Paula Dishman - Msc (Psych), TSTA(P),CTA, UKCP Psychotherapy, Counselling, Supervision, Training
- Counselling or Psychotherapy ? - Because the titles of psychotherapist and counsellor are not currently protected, sadly many people use them interchangably, however, there can be significant differences between the two approaches and there are all sorts of reasons to seek out either or both. Some people look to do short term work (6-8 sessions) to deal with a specific problem or situation and this would typically be counselling and you will generally see someone who is registered with the BACP. Other people want the opportunity for a wider and more detailed reflection on their lives, relationships, repeated patterns which cause difficulties or responses to trauma and this would typically be psychotherapy. As a guide, generally only those who are registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) would have met the criteria and conditions to be able to offer psychotherapy. There are some exceptions to this but it you want to confidently appraoch someone for psychotherapy then this would be a good place to start. Often UKCP registered psychotherapists, like me will have done an initial training in counselling and then gone on to train as a psychotherapist. I have extensive experience of working with many clients with a wide range of difficulties and at our initial appointment we will be able to establish which type of therapy is right for you. This can be done face to face or online
